Golden Company Revolutionizes Surgical Procedures
Published Apr 16, 2006

In the world of science, it is essential to think big. The technology itself, however, seems to be getting smaller all the time.

Take the case of Golden-based BioVision Technologies LLC, for example. A subsidiary of Carsan Engineering Inc., BioVision Technologies provides innovative imaging systems that enable doctors and veterinarians to perform minimally invasive procedures with more precision and less pain.

For example, the company has developed the world’s only FDA-approved 1mm disposable endoscope for small-joint diagnostics.

“Consider a common problem area such as the knee,” says vice president John K. Small. “Doctors traditionally use an MRI to diagnose knee injuries, but 30 percent to 40 percent of those diagnoses prove to be inconclusive. With our disposable endoscope, the doctor can diagnose the problem in his office while you’re awake, and then you drive yourself home.”

Another important development is a portable endoscopic imaging system.

“The typical visualization system – with camera, light source, monitor and video capturing capability would measure about 6 feet tall and weigh around 300 pounds,” Small says. “Our system weighs less than 10 pounds, it’s affordable and it’s easy to use.

“Combine this product with our disposable endoscope, you have what we call disruptive technology – it could change the minimally invasive surgical and diagnostic market as we know it.”

It’s this kind of technology that has led to the company’s growth and success. In fact, Inc. magazine recognized Carsan as one of the nation’s fastest-growing, privately held corporations in both 1999 and 2000.
