Summit Doppler Systems manufactures equipment that monitors fetal heartbeat and diagnoses vascular flow.
Technology may be the name of the game for many local bioscience companies. But for Summit Doppler Systems Inc., a Jefferson County address means more than just lab space.
“This is a good location for our business,” says Don Befort, vice president of operations. “We do everything from A to Z here – research and development, manufacturing, shipping, marketing, sales.”
Founded just two years ago, Summit Doppler Systems is already a leading manufacturer of ultrasound Doppler systems used to monitor fetal heartbeat and to diagnose vascular flow. The company actually emerged from the demise of what was Imex Medical Systems Inc.
“Imex did business in Jefferson County for about 25 years before being bought out by a Wisconsin-based company,” Befort explains. “They decided to close the Jefferson County facility, but several former Imex employees teamed up to found Summit Doppler Systems.”
Born and raised in and around the Denver area, Befort points to Golden’s outstanding quality of life and talented labor force as key business advantages.
“This is such a technology-rich area, and that’s a nice advantage for businesses. There are a lot of good technology people in Jefferson County.”
Of course, the region’s benefits extend well beyond the talented labor pool.
“The climate is very attractive, and we have tremendous access – not only from a business standpoint but also in terms of recreation,” he adds. “Whether it be skiing, hiking, fishing or golf, it’s a great place to live.”
And while the people behind Summit Doppler Systems boast more than three decades of medical equipment design and manufacturing experience, they are always looking toward the future.
“We have a product in the FDA right now that is the first of its kind in the world,” Befort says. “It will enable OB/GYNs to detect fetal heartbeat in the very early stages of pregnancy. It’s very exciting.”
