Making $4-a-Gallon Gas More Tolerable
Published Jun 12, 2008

How does going 100 miles on a gallon of gas sound to you about now?

According to an article June 9, 2008, in the Rocky Mountain News, scientists at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden added a solar panel and larger battery to a Toyota Prius – and 100 mpg performance was the result.

The catch? The research vehicle represents an investment of nearly $70,000 – the cost of the assembly-line Prius plus $40,000 for the bigger, rechargeable, lithium-ion battery and $2,500 for the rooftop solar panel.

Still, automakers are said to be interested in NREL’s research.
