Career, Tech Ed Options Abound in Jefferson
Published Apr 16, 2006
Jefferson County educators want students to see their high school graduation as a transition, not an ending point.
“I think our mission serves us well,” says Mary Stecklein, career and technical education director for the Jefferson County School District. That mission aims to provide a quality education for all students, ensuring that they graduate with choices, she explains.
A variety of career-preparation programs fall under the umbrella of career and technical education in Jefferson County. Students can study digital video production, culinary skills, marketing, graphic design, cosmetology and auto technology, to name just a few.
At Warren Tech, Jefferson County’s career and technical high school, students choose from 24 different programs. They divide their time between Warren Tech and their home high schools, earning credits toward their high school graduation requirements, explains Warren Tech Principal Joe Shaw.
Warren Tech serves a whole spectrum of students, Shaw says, from advanced-placement, college-prep students all the way to students with special needs.
Alternative Cooperative Education seeks to deliver learning and career skills in ways that reflect the students’ individual interests.
ACE programs give students a chance to earn their diplomas and exit high school ready for the world of work, says Deborah Gard, principal at McLain High School.
“ACE is a good way for these students to start exploring that career and vocation piece, as well as earning high school credits more quickly.”
