Golden Company Drills into Oil Industry Research
Published Apr 16, 2006
With domestic energy needs in the United States far exceeding today’s readily accessible energy resources, some would say that a fuel crisis might be on the horizon.
However, Luca Technologies LLC, a private research firm based in Golden, is addressing this issue and raising the eyebrows of global leaders in the oil and gas industry with a new solution.
Luca’s answer uses naturally occurring microorganisms to convert underutilized domestic oil, organic-rich shale and coal resources into clean, renewable energy.
If the company is successful in turning its early lab results into field success, the oil and gas industry could be turned upside down.
“Our cutting-edge technology has brought a new level of interest and awareness to the oil and gas industry,” says Christie Haas, vice president of Luca Technologies LLC. “Luca provides the technology to turn finite resources into a cost-effective, reliable and renewable resource of the cleanest burning hydrocarbon fuel.”
The science behind this groundbreaking concept utilizes such tools as DNA sequencing to identify and cultivate tiny microbes that eat coal and oil shale – and produce natural gas.
While currently in the process of launching a field test of its concept, Haas says the company fully expects the results of its research will have a worldwide impact.
“We’re currently working to demonstrate the viability of our technology not only in the laboratory, but also in the real world,” Haas says. “We are hoping to have a full-scale commercialization program in place within the next couple of years.”
