MVSystems a Key Player in Photonics Industry
Published Apr 16, 2006

MVSystems Inc. designs, manufactures and delivers specialty machinery for the thin film semiconductor market.
When Arun Madan moved from Michigan to Jefferson County for a position with a prestigious multinational firm in 1982, he quickly became an integral part of the area’s growing scientific community.
So in 1989, when Madan, a Ph.D. in physics, was asked to relocate again, he instead opted to remain in the area and start his own business, MVSystems Inc.
The photonics company designs, manufactures and delivers specialty machinery for the thin film semiconductor market.
“We’re very much a behind-the-scenes company, so while we don’t actually make products, such as the laptop computer display or the solar cell-powered calculator, we provide the machines and technology that enable our customers to produce these high-tech items,” says Madan, whose clients include universities, laboratories, Fortune 500 companies and the federal government.
With nearly 80 of its specially designed machines operating in 18 countries around the globe, MVSystems is growing along with the semiconductor market.
According to Madan, the $30 billion industry is expanding at a rate of 20 percent to 30 percent each year, creating a wealth of opportunities for those in the photonics field.
“It’s a very exciting time to be part of this industry, and I believe Jefferson County is an excellent location for companies in our field,” says Madan, who has more than 30 years of experience in thin film semiconductors, materials and electronic devices and was one of the originators of amorphous silicon in 1970 in the United Kingdom.
“In addition to the quality workforce, we work with several local suppliers to produce our machines, which range in price from $500,000 to $4 million and can take anywhere from six to 16 months to manufacture.”
With a new 10,000-square-foot facility located in Golden, MVSystems employs a full staff of highly qualified physicists and process, design and software engineers, more than 30 percent of whom hold a Ph.D. in their fields of expertise.
